For the convenience of our members, we have adopted several payment modes to make it easy for members to remit their contributions. One can pay through:

You can pay contributions through MPESA by using 222222 as the paybill number. For the account number, enter the prefix NHIFM followed by a hyphen (-) then followed by your Your ID Number without spaces. e.g. NHIFM-IDNumber
02.
Various banks like Equity Bank, National Bank (NBK), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Cooperative Bank (Note: NHIF Printed Banking slips are available in the fore-mentioned banks)
03.
You can pay through e-citizen by logging into your e-citizen account and following the prompts.
04.
Safaricom Bonga points are redeemable to pay for NHIF. One can dial *126#, navigate to Lipa Na Bonga, then to PayBill Number as 222222, and the account number as NHIFM-IDNumber without spaces.
Contributions & Penalties
Every registered self-employed member is required to make a monthly contribution of KES 500 to their accounts. Existing members are required to pay on or before the 9th of the following month to avoid penalties.
If payments are made after 9th of the following month, then a penalty of 10% (KES 50) of the voluntary monthly contribution will be surcharged. A member will be required to pay outstanding arrears and/or penalties to access services.
The following steps are used to make monthly contributions through MPESA.

Go to M-PESA Menu, click on Lipa Na Mpesa then PayBill.

Enter 222222 as the PayBill Number.
03.
For the account number, enter the prefix NHIFM followed by a hyphen (-) then followed by your Your ID Number without spaces. e.g. NHIFM-IDNumber
04.
Enter KES 500 for every month you wish to pay for or KES 6,000 if you wish to pay for the whole year. The system can only accept a maximum of KES 6,000 at a go if you wish to make bulk payments.
05.
Enter your Safaricom PIN Number.
06.
You will receive a message from MPESA confirming that you have successfully made the contribution. The M-PESA message you will receive is proof of payment.
*Please note that you are supposed to use your National Identification Number in the format above (NHIFM-IDNumber) as your Account Number and not your NHIF Member Number. You have to pay premiums up to the current month for your cover to be active. Safaricom’s Terms and Conditions Apply
Pay for your NHIF penalties using the following steps:
01.
Go to M-PESA Menu, click on Lipa Na Mpesa then PayBill.

Enter 222222 as the PayBill Number.
03.
For the account number, enter the prefix NHIFP followed by a hyphen (-) then followed by your Your ID Number without spaces. e.g. NHIFP-IDNumber
04.
Enter KES 50 for every month defaulted e.g. if you have defaulted for 4 months enter KES 200 as the amount.
05.
Enter your Safaricom PIN Number.
06.
You will receive a message from MPESA confirming that you have successfully paid the penalty. The M-PESA message you will receive is proof of payment.
Erroneous Payments
If one makes an error during the process of payment, for example, if one inputs their NHIF Member Number as the M-PESA Account Number instead of their National Identification Number, or a wrong prefix, they can visit our Accounts Department at any of our offices with a copy of their National Identification Card with the M-PESA message they received from Safaricom capturing the erroneous transaction they made and they will get assistance.
If a member defaults for more than 12 Months, they will be treated like a new entrant/member in the scheme. They can reactivate their NHIF cover by paying KES 1,500 which will act as their three months’ contribution. They will then have to wait for 2 months (60 days) from the date of payment for their cover to be active. One is advised to subsequently make monthly payments to avoid penalties.

Visiting the nearest NHIF office or Huduma Center.
05.
Sending a text message with the format [ID {space} Your National Identification Number] e.g. (ID 12345678) to 1550.
